• Governor Cuomo Signs Power Act Into Law

    Nearly $2 million will now be available for economic development in St. Lawrence County after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that allows proceeds from the sale of a block of hydropower from NYPA's St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project to be used to help create jobs and build industry in the region.

    State legislative leaders have reached an agreement allowing the St. Lawrence River Valley Redevelopment Agency to sell the unused portion of its low-cost power allocation and use the proceeds to spur economic growth in St. Lawrence County.

    Natural Resources

    St. Lawrence County provides unlimited opportunities for new or expanding industry.  An abundant and stable supply of natural gas and electricity are available at competitive rates.  The St. Lawrence River runs the length of the County’s northern border, providing an inexhaustible supply of fresh water for industrial use.  There is a water flow of 242,800 cubic feet per second from the St. Lawrence and over seven billion kilowatt hours of power are produced annually from all of the county's rivers.  Extensive stands of hardwood and softwood timber, a thriving dairy industry and rich mineral resources have resulted in a broad diversification of industry in St. Lawrence County.

    Educational Resources

    Our local and state job training programs are organized into an easy-to-use, interactive network created under the concept of a "One Stop” system.  To best meet the labor needs of local employers, the St. Lawrence County One Stop Career Center offers the combined programs and services of a number of workforce development agencies.  Through this easy-to-use Center, you will find assistance with the recruitment of new employees, incumbent worker training, on-the-job training and customized training programs.

    With a number of higher education institutions in our county, including Clarkson University, St. Lawrence University and the State University of New York at Potsdam, you will also have access to highly skilled graduates to fill the technology positions for which recruitment and retention is becoming so competitive.  These colleges offer, in addition to liberal arts and vocational courses, computer science, technology and engineering degree programs.  Furthermore, the State University of New York College of Technology at Canton is willing and able to provide customized technical training programs for specific worksite needs.

    Transportation Systems

    St. Lawrence County's transportation systems provide efficient and flexible movement of both passengers and materials throughout the county and to other regions.  The county has established facilities for rail transportation, trucking, air travel and air freight.   Additionally, the Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) qualified Port of Ogdensburg provides access to the Great Lakes and world ports.


    Financing & Incentives

    Financing incentives are available from federal, state and local agencies to assist in starting or expanding a business in St. Lawrence County.  Incentives include Industrial Revenue Bonds and long term/low interest loans and loan guarantees for the acquisition of property, construction of buildings and purchase of equipment.  In addition, St. Lawrence County and New York State offer a variety of tax credits, deductions, and exemptions on real property and business income.
